In June, Social4Good Championed Children in Foster Care!

In June, Social4Good (S4G) embarked on an ambitious project to support 230 children in Stop Child Abuse Now’s (SCAN) Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program.

Sadly, child abuse is not rare and over 90% of abuse is by someone known to the child.  Children who are abused and who lack strong community or interpersonal support may grow up to be adults with serious academic, financial, relationship and health issues.  But child abuse is preventable and children can recover.

SCAN of Northern Virginia is the only region-wide organization focused solely on preventing child abuse and neglect across Northern Virginia.  SCAN provides a voice for children in the court system and support for parents, while building institutions that protect children in order to make child abuse prevention a community priority.

Something New to Call Their Own

In June, Social4Good members and our community supported 230 children that are currently in foster care and in the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program by creating essentials bags for 57 teens (ages 13-18) and toys and activities for 173 children (ages newborn - 12) that will be gifted by their advocate when they meet.  All items were designed to instill confidence, promote interaction with their CASA and give them a sense of home at a crisis point in their lives.

Celebrating Our Incredible Results!

At our June 22nd event at Fogo de Chao, members gathered for a “Social” and to celebrate the “4Good.” The importance of our project was brought to life by Director of CASA, Amy Wilker's, powerful impact statement about the S4G contributions, and an S4G member’s adopted daughter who shared her own experience in the foster care system and with her CASA.

"I have no words to truly express my gratitude and astonishment at the overwhelming generosity of your group. This is just the beginning of 'Something New to Call Their Own' and I cannot wait to see the impact on the children we serve."   Amy Wilker, Director CASA Program

In addition to providing items for the children currently in CASA’s program, S4G established a special fund to support vulnerable children when and how they need our help.  Whether supporting a child's dream of participating in an activity, sponsoring their field trip or celebrating their success in school, our $2250 fund will promote a sense of normal for neglected and abused children in our community.
